Services

Many services can be accessed without making an appointment including:

Certain problems are best assessed by health professionals other than your GP and a number of free services are available:

  • Eye problems should always be assessed by an optician rather than a GP. These problems are assessed by opticians free of charge. Opticians can provide a much more detailed assessment of your eyes than a GP. They can also refer you to hospital for further assessment by an eye specialist doctor if required.
  • Toothache should always be assessed by your dentist. Dentists are also happy to assess other mouth problems and can refer you for further treatment if required.
  • Minor illnesses can also be assessed and treated free of charge by your local pharmacist. The NHS Pharmacy First Scotland service is provided by your local community pharmacy. You do not usually need an appointment and you can go to any pharmacy. Your local pharmacist or a trained member of the pharmacy team will give you advice and provide medicine if needed. Further information in this service is available here.
  • Minor injuries such as burns, broken bones and sprains should be assessed at the Minor Injuries Unit at The Victoria Infirmary. The Minor Injuries Unit is open every day of the week including weekends and bank holidays from 9AM-9PM. They will see patients above the age of five. Younger children with these problems should be taken to the Emergency Department at the Royal Hospital for Children. Further information on the Minor Injury Unit is available here.
